Alcova Elementary School has a developmental guidance program for all students in kindergarten through the fifth grade. It is made up of the following components:
1. Classroom guidance is based on the Gwinnett County Counselors Standards and Competencies. All students will participate in six or more lessons throughout the year based on these competencies. (See Standards and Competencies link.)
2. Group counseling is available for students with specific needs. Some of these include: Success Clubs, Family Changes, Loss, and Attendance groups. Parental permission is requested for group counseling.
3. Crisis Intervention and Individual Counseling is available to all students on a short-term basis. A referral to see a counselor may be requested by a student, parent, teacher or administrator.
4. The 5th Grade Leadership program is available for all fifth grade students. This program involves students working in various "jobs" at school. The fifth grade counselor coordinates the program and both counselors provide training for Alcova Ambassadors and Peer Leaders. Ambassadors welcome new students and provide a tour of the building. Peer Leaders serve as role models for classmates, as well as tutors or buddies for younger students.
5. The Care Team provides resources for needy families of Alcova Elementary School students. All referrals are confidential. (See Care Team link for more details.)
6. Consultation with all teachers and parents is available as needed. Appointments can be scheduled via e-mail or phone call. A counselor also serves on the Student Study Team with the teacher and parents of any student who is experiencing academic, behavioral and/or emotional challenges.
7. Bully prevention and Mediation for all students. The "Too Good For Violence" curriculum by the Mendez Foundation is taught in most grade levels through classroom guidance.
8. The FLAME program is a new program at Alcova where local Firefighters come to school to eat lunch and spend time with selected students. Parental permission is required.
