Welcome to Alcova Elementary School! Moving is a stressful event in the life of a family. A smooth transition at home will naturally make the adjustment at school more successful. To that end, the counseling team would like to offer these suggestions to help your family:
Encourage your child to think of the move as a new beginning.
Show tolerance and understanding for the expressions of sadness or loss that your child my show shortly after a move. However, help him/her not to dwell too much on it.
Arrange your child’s room as soon as possible with familiar items.
Take an immediate interest in your child’s school and activities. Be alert to potential academic and social problems.
Until he/she makes new friends, your child needs you to fill that void.
Give your child opportunities to seek out new people. Encourage outside activities, such as school, church, YMCA, scouts, music lessons or hobbies.
Explore the community. Play the tourist. Check out the newspapers, museums, recreation areas, sports teams, etc.
Children adjust at their own speed. Patience and encouragement from you is helpful.
Keep a scrapbook of old friends, home and community.
Talk to school staff and teachers about your child’s adjustment. Get more information to determine if there is a more serious adjustment concern.
Keep a positive outlook – children take their cue from their parents’ attitudes.
